Strong typhoon hits Japan, disrupting flights and trains


A powerful typhoon hit Japan and some of its eastern islands today, Friday, with strong winds and torrential rain, which led to the suspension of some domestic flights and trains.


The Tokyo area was hit by heavy rain and winds in the middle of the day, but no injuries were reported.


The Japan Meteorological Agency said, as reported by "Russia Today", that Typhoon "Mendol" was near one of the Izu islands off the southern coast of Tokyo, moving toward the northeast at a speed of about 35 kilometers (21 miles) per hour and carrying winds of up to 162 kilometers. 100 miles per hour.


Some local train services in Chiba and other prefectures east of Tokyo were temporarily suspended Friday, and many flights and ferries connecting Tokyo's Haneda Airport and the outer islands were cancelled.


Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary Katsunobu Kato told reporters that there were no reports of damage or injuries so far, and urged Izu residents to stay indoors and avoid approaching glass windows, until the typhoon passed.


The Meteorological Authority warned residents of the affected areas of the possibility of floods and mudslides.
