The French army launches Operation APAGAN to ensure the evacuation of citizens from Kabul

The French army launched an operation to evacuate French nationals from the Afghan capital, Kabul, after the Taliban militants took control of it.

In a statement posted on Twitter, the French army said: "The armies launch Operation APAGAN to ensure the evacuation of French, European and Afghan nationals from Kabul."

For his part, French President Emmanuel Macron said that "the current situation in Afghanistan has major repercussions for France, Europe and the entire international community," adding: "France will work with Germany and its European partners on an initiative to address the problems related to migrants and refugees."

The French president pointed out that "I agreed with Merkel and other leaders to coordinate a strategy to confront the influx of refugees, as instability in Afghanistan may result in the influx of waves of migrants to Europe."

He added: "France will do everything in its power to enable Washington, Moscow and Europe to coordinate effectively on the Afghan crisis."
