Petroleum: Agreement to define environmental controls for research and exploration


Engineer Tarek El Molla, Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, and Dr. Yasmine Fouad, Minister of Environment, held a meeting at the headquarters of the Ministry of Petroleum to discuss the foundations of environmental compatibility and sustainability for mining activities and the exploitation of mineral wealth, which comes within the framework of the joint work between the Ministries of Petroleum and Environment to reach a model for environmental compatibility in the field of mining similar to the successful model. Which was applied in the petroleum activities in the Gulf of Suez after the implementation of the sanitation program agreed upon between the two ministries.

 

During the meeting, the two ministers agreed to develop a cooperation protocol between the Environmental Affairs Agency and the Egyptian General Authority for Mineral Resources, with the aim of determining environmental controls for research operations, as well as environmental controls for extraction and mining operations, in addition to the basis for environmental review and control over mining activities, taking into account the nature of the areas in which mining practices take place. In terms of being areas of nature reserves.

 

Engineer Tarek El Molla, Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, stressed that the current period is witnessing unprecedented cooperation and a successful model for joint work between the Ministries of Petroleum and Environment by agreeing on plans and work programs that ensure the achievement of sound and environmentally sustainable practices within the framework of the trend towards sustainable development that the political leadership and the government are keen on. Its application, referring to the successful cooperation model in petroleum projects in the Gulf of Suez after implementing the sanitation program agreed upon between the two ministries, which came with distinguished results.

 

In a press statement, El Molla stressed, today, Friday, the importance of the current coordination and integration between the two ministries in the environmental aspects of mining projects and the exploitation of mineral wealth, in order to implement sound and environmentally sustainable practices in this sector, which is one of the most important sources of income hoped for by the Egyptian economy, especially after the implementation of a new law. For mining and the development of the investment climate, which contributed to the development of the volume of business and attracting Egyptian and international companies to invest in this sector through the largest global bidding for gold search in the Eastern Desert, pointing to the importance of separating the activities of searching for production for mineral wealth in the new mining law, which positively reflects on achieving the objectives of conservation. on the environment.

 

Al-Mulla added that the petroleum and mineral wealth sector is aware of the importance of environmental compatibility and work in accordance with the environmental requirements in the Environmental Law, and puts sustainability as a basic approach to its practices through the adoption of controls and technologies that enhance that.

 

For her part, Dr. Yasmine Fouad, Minister of Environment, expressed her welcome to work with the Ministry of Petroleum represented by the Mineral Resources Authority to integrate environmental dimensions in this important field, stressing the ministry's endeavor to repeat the successful experience that occurred in the petroleum file and its responsibility to protect the environment and natural resources in natural reserves and encourage friendly investment. The environment in the field of mining and in accordance with the law of the environment and the law of nature reserves.

 

The Minister of Environment indicated that the ministry is seeking to correct the idea of ​​not violating the natural reserves and allowing mining in them with specific controls, stressing that a meeting will be held between the head of the Environmental Affairs Agency, the head of the nature protection sector, evaluation officials in the ministry and representatives of the Mineral Resources Authority to discuss studies of environmental impact assessment for the projects being implemented to reach Clear and specific plans that can be implemented and achieve common interests, as well as discussing the signing of a cooperation protocol between the Environmental Affairs Agency and the Mineral Resources Authority that defines controls in research, extraction, monitoring and review by the Ministry of Environment inside and outside natural reserves, provided that a joint memorandum is prepared with all procedures and controls and what is agreed upon in preparation. to be presented to the Cabinet.

 

The Minister of Environment made it clear that a continuous follow-up will be carried out on the environmental approvals obtained by a number of 14 projects, with their cancellation in case of violation and non-compliance with what was agreed upon.
