The guilty plea deal.. the wife of the world's largest drug dealer is trying to get the least punishment

Emma Coronel, the wife of the world's largest drug dealer, El Chapo Guzman, is trying to get the least possible sentence after she was arrested in the United States of America, through attempts to reach an agreement with the US government after intense discussions between the prosecutors and Coronel's lawyers.

Emma Coronel faces a minimum sentence of 10 years in prison and a maximum sentence of life in prison, in addition to a possible fine of $10 million, if she is found guilty of drug trafficking, Argentine newspaper Infobae said.

The newspaper pointed out that Chapo Guzmán's wife decides to follow the same steps as those around her in the Sinaloa Cartel, choosing to accept a plea bargain, in exchange for a not too harsh sentence.

Her lawyer, Marielle Colon, told Onción Noticias that Emma Coronel could cut the deal with US authorities, but unlike other members of the Sinaloa Cartel, she would not cooperate with the US government.

Colon explained that her client feared for her life and the life of her twin, after news spread that she had turned herself in to be a cooperative witness.

Emma was arrested on February 22, and the US Department of Justice confirmed that Coronel, 31, who helped the Chapo escape from Altiplano Mexico in 2015, also conspired to smuggle drugs into Mexico.

Emma Coronel revealed that she has been in contact with the authorities of the United States of America since 2017, and has been in contact with officials from the FBI, the US Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) and the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and spoke with her for 4 years.

"Ms. Coronel told us about her extradition plans several days before her arrival at Dulles Airport (Virginia), the Department of Justice and prosecutors have been notified of this so that they can prepare what is necessary to get her out," said one of the anonymous agents.
