27 people die due to lightning strikes in India

At least 27 people were killed by lightning strikes in several districts of India's West Bengal state, officials said on Tuesday.

According to the Emirati statement website, storms before the monsoon season hit six areas in the state late on Monday, accompanied by strong storms.

Disaster management official Mirnal Kanti Rano said that although most of the casualties were caused by lightning, deaths were recorded following the collapse of nest huts and trees.

Rano added that in the worst incident, six people who were sitting near a pump in Murshidabad district were struck by lightning.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his grief over the casualties. He announced compensation for the families of the victims amounting to 200,000 rupees ($2,746) and 500,000 rupees for each injured person.
