Guardian: Former Republicans seek to establish a "center-right" party against Trump

Dozens of former Republican officials who see the party as unwilling to stand up to former President Donald Trump are in talks to establish a center-right party, Reuters reported, four people familiar with the talks told Reuters.

The newspaper pointed out that the discussions, which are still in their initial stages, include former elected Republicans, former officials in the administrations of Ronald Reagan, George Bush father and son, and Trump, former Republican ambassadors and strategic planners.

More than 120 of those held a meeting via Zoom last Friday to discuss a separate group that will have a program based on "principled conservatism," which includes adherence to the constitution and the rule of law, ideas that they say have been shattered by Trump.

The plan will be to put forward candidates in some races, and also to support candidates from the right of center in other races, whether they are Republicans, Democrats or independents, according to the people involved.

Reuters quoted Evan McMullen, who is Karen's chief policy director for Republicans in the House and ran as an independent in the presidential election for a year, as saying he co-hosted a Zoom meeting with former officials who fear Trump's grip on Republicans and the nationalism of the party.

Three other officials confirmed to Reuters this meeting and discussions to establish a possible new party, but refused to reveal their identity.

Also among the participants were John Mitnick, General Counsel for the Department of Homeland Security in the Trump administration, former Republican Congressman Charlie Dent, Elizabeth Newment, deputy chief of staff for the Department of Homeland Security under Trump, and Miles Taylor, a former homeland security official under Trump as well.
